Driveway Lifting

A settled driveway is more than a small inconvenience. It can strain vehicles, create trip hazards, and lower curb appeal. Many homeowners think replacement is the only option, but that is not the case. Several driveway lifting methods can raise and support concrete, but polyurethane foam injection brings the most reliable results for most homes today.

What is Driveway Lifting?

Driveway lifting raises a settled slab back to its design elevation. The goal is to restore grade, remove hazards, and rebuild proper contact with the subgrade. Modern concrete raising uses injected material to correct slab displacement and reinforce the bearing layer. When done correctly, the slab regains support across its full footprint.

What Causes Driveways to Sink?

Driveways settle for a few common reasons. Soil shifts, moisture moves in and out of the ground, heavy vehicles stress weak spots, so on and so forth. Once the soil drops, the concrete ultimately follows.

If you notice these early signs, prompt repair can keep the slab from sinking further.

Repair Options for Driveway Lifting

Homeowners often hear about several driveway repair options. Each uses a different approach.

  • Mudjacking – A grout like slurry is pumped under the slab. It can lift concrete, but it adds weight to soil that is already unstable. It also needs larger drill holes and a longer cure time.
  • Grinding – Grinding removes the high points. It does not lift the slab or fix soil issues. It is only helpful in very light cases.
  • Replacement – Full replacement is costly and messy. It requires demolition, hauling, framing, and curing. Many driveways do not need this level of work.
  • Polyurethane Foam Injection – This is the modern method. It uses lightweight expanding foam to fill voids and lift the slab. The foam stays stable and supports the slab long term.

Polyurethane Foam Injection – Driveway Lifting Process

Polyurethane foam lifting is precise work. The material reacts fast, expands with controlled force, and bonds with soil and concrete. A strong repair depends on correct evaluation, injection strategy, and foam management.

1. Subsurface Evaluation

Before any drilling, we map the slab. We look for concrete voids, soft spots, and pressure points. This often includes:

  • slab thickness checks
  • joint inspection
  • soil density checks
  • signs of moisture movement

These details guide where we drill and how much concrete jacking foam each zone needs.

2. Injection Layout Planning

We mark a grid across the slab. Each injection point has a purpose…some points fill voids, others drive lift, etc. Placement is based on how the slab moved and how the soil responds.

3. Drilling the Ports

Ports are drilled at about five eighths of an inch (the small size is what keeps the slab strong). Each hole is angled or straight based on the target zone under the slab. And then the dust is cleared so the port fits tight.

4. Foam Chemistry and Reaction Control

Concrete leveling foam comes as two liquids. When mixed, the material expands and hardens. Control comes from:

  • temperature of the components
  • injection rate
  • back pressure under the slab
  • soil moisture levels

Warmer foam expands faster, cooler foam expands slower. We will adjust the reaction so the lift is steady without pushing too hard.

5. Lifting the Slab

Lift is performed in micro‑increments. Sensors track slab movement to fractions of an inch. We balance lift between ports to avoid slab stress or cracking, so if one section rises ahead of others, we redirect injection to bring the slab into uniform elevation.

6. Soil Stabilization

The foam permeates loose or saturated zones. It binds soil particles, reduces void volume, and increases load-bearing capacity. This is a major reason foam lifting prevents repeat house settling. Learn more about soil stabilization.

7. Void Filling

After the lift is complete, we will fill the remaining voids. This adds support across the entire slab so weight from vehicles spreads evenly.

8. Finish Work

Ports are patched with a material matched to the slab surface. Because the foam cures fast, most driveways can support traffic shortly after completion.

Polyurethane foam is known for maintaining its structure. It does not absorb water, and it does not rot, but it does resist soil moisture changes. Cement lifting foam stays locked to the slab and provides ongoing support!

Many homeowners choose this method because…

  • fast cure time
  • small drill holes
  • no heavy equipment
  • long lasting support
  • strong lift without extra weight
  • clean process with little mess
  • helps protect the soil base

When to Call a Professional

If you see sunken sections or uneven joints, it is time to schedule an inspection. Early action keeps damage from spreading. A trained technician can assess the soil, check the slab movement, and recommend the right fix. Many driveways qualify for poly foam injection with no need for replacement!
